Hike to Humantay Lake
Breakfast at the lodge and afterwards we will begin an ascent up the slopes that border the plateau behind the Salkantay Lodge. After hiking for one hour and a half we will reach Humantay Lake, which is turquoise in color and surrounded by glaciers. Here we will have a chance to relax, enjoy a snack, meditate in the tranquility of this magical spot and be part of a tradition offering to "Pachamama" (Mother Earth). After our descent back to the lodge, the staff will be waiting with a hot lunch. The second half of the day is spent at leisure. You may opt to soak in the outdoor jacuzzi, indulge in a relaxing massage or take a long nap.

Altitude Salkantay Lodge: 3869m

Crossing Salkantay Pass
After an early start, we will hike up the Rio Blanco Valley, circling Humantay Peak. As we make our way up the mountain trail we will encounter expansive plateaus dotted with boulders. The most challenging part of our ascent is conquering the mountain switchbacks that take us to the Salkantay Pass, the highest point on the trek. (4,636m) What follows is a dramatic descent through giant boulders and often shrouded in fog. After a welcoming hot picnic lunch, we will continue down through bucolic rolling hills and marsh like plateaus. We will arrive to the Wayra Lodge at Wayraccmachay.

Salkantay Pass: 4,636m (The highest altitude reached on the trek)

Descending into the Cloud Forest
After a leisurely breakfast at the Wayra Lodge, we will continue our descent along the banks of the Salkantay River through increasingly verdant scenery. Today we will see more locals. At lunchtime we will arrive at Colpa Lodge. Upon arrival we will be greeted by the staff with a Pachamanca lunch which is a traditional Peruvian meal cooked under the earth with hot stones that create a natural oven. After lunch, spend the afternoon lounging in the sun or relaxing in the outdoor jacuzzi while you take in the panoramic views of the lush green mountains that surround you.

Altitude at Colpa Lodge: 2,870m

Following the Santa Teresa River Valley
Today we will hike to Santa Teresa River Valley where we will hop over small streams fed by waterfalls descending from the glaciers and cross through fruit orchards. After breaking for a hot picnic lunch by the river, we will walk for one hour before we meet our driver for a short drive to the beginning of the "Lactapata Inca Trail" that leads us to Lucma Lodge. On the way you will visit an organic coffee plantation, one of the many in the area that produces some of the best organic coffee in the world. In Lucmabamba, the hot air and increased humidity signal that you are even closer to the edge of the Amazon Jungle.

Altitude Lucma Lodge: 2,135m

During a 2-3 hour climb up a path mostly comprised of original Inca steps, hiking through lush tropical Rainforest. We will trek to a peak, the last one we reach before the Aobamba River Valley that connects us to Machu Picchu. When we arrive at the ruins of Llactapata at the Llactapata Pass (2,736m) we will be delighted to see the southeast view of the "back" of Machu. We will enjoy lunch a bit farther down the trail in a meadow with panoramic views. The final descent takes us through lush bamboo forests, until we end the day´s hike at the Hidroelectrica train station. A one-hour scenic train ride delivers us to our final stop, the town of Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. Here we will overnight at the 5 star Inkaterra El Pueblo hotel.

Altitude at Aguas Calientes: 1,900m

At dawn, we will begin our journey to Machu Picchu with a short bus ride. Prepare to be awed by the inspiring and skillful architecture of the Watchtower, the temple of the Sun, and the royal Inca residences, among many others. Your imagination will soar as you contemplate the history of Machu Picchu and it´s mysterious origins. After your visit you will have lunch in Aguas Calientes before boarding a scenic train ride back to Cusco where you will be met and transferred back to your hotel.

Many of them are considered pioneers in this area, having scouted many of the current routes in the country. All guides have excellent language skills, and are highly trained in managing group dynamics. All guides undergo continuous medical and rescue training, with certification in "Wilderness First Aid". You will appreciate their knowledge and history and cultural traditions, as well as their interpretation of the local flora and fauna, and their insights (and stories!) that go far beyond any guide and history book.
